Unlocking Independence with Voice Technology

Introducing a new Amazon Alexa app designed to make community support information accessible to all

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

A new voice in the emerging voice technology space is ALISS. Powered by Amazon Alexa, ALISS (A Local Information System for Scotland) is the first voice application of its kind.

ALISS is a national digital system designed to help people find and share information on services, groups, activities, and resources in their local communities across Scotland. The ALLIANCE has partnered with TL Tech Ltd to provide a new vision for ALISS to make it more accessible, particularly for those with low digital literacy or who may have a physical condition or disability that makes using computers or tablet devices more difficult.

“Alexa, enable My Scottish Community”

ALISS for Alexa is the newly launched voice-activated version of the online information hub developed by fusing TL Tech’s technical ability with the rich data provided by ALISS. By using voice commands, the user can simply say, “Alexa, enable My Scottish Community” and ‘ask Alexa’ for what they would like to find. The aim is to support people to stay connected to their communities and access the support they need when they need it most.

Thanks to funding from Innovate UK as part of their Healthy Ageing Challenge, the TL Tech team have been able to work in collaboration with a range of stakeholders and people with lived experience to co-design the new ALISS voice app.

Celebrating its launch, TL Tech managing director and co-founder, Caroline Laurenson, said, “We are proud to support the launch of ALISS using Amazon Alexa. To be able to access information on activities taking place in your local area by simply asking Alexa is an exciting development and a great example of how technology can be used to make access to information more convenient.

“We have developed the voice version of ALISS to be user-friendly, with accessibility as a top priority. Technology should be about making our lives easier. We’re proud to be at the forefront of developing a technology that aims to improve the quality of life for millions of Scots.”

Partnerships like these are essential for the sustainability of the health and social care system in Scotland. ALISS for Alexa demonstrates the effectiveness of voice technology and is proof of concept to others who seek to develop services that are inclusive and accessible to all.
